SANTA CRUZ — The City of Santa Cruz welcomes the public to celebrate the official open of the San Lorenzo River Parkway Phase II Project on Friday, Jan. 22, at 5:15 p.m. with California Secretary for Natural Resources John Laird, Mayor Cynthia Mathews, Coastal Watershed Council Executive Director Greg Pepping, Leveelie Founder Janet Fardette, City officials and community members. The ceremony will take place at the San Lorenzo River Levee next to Kaiser Permanente Arena and adjacent to Laurel Street Extension — rain or shine.

Completed project components include 40 energy efficient levee pathway lights, a fitness station and seating areas along the west levee between Laurel Street Extension and the Water Street Bridge.

The new 16 feet tall lights use energy efficient LEDs and are directed downward on the levee pathway with lenses and skirts to help minimize any light spillover. The lights are located on the landside of the levee path to help shield the river further from spillover light.

The fitness station consists of low-intensity equipment as part of the running course that has previously been established. It is located south of the Laurel Street Bridge and adjacent to the Laurel Street Extension path area. The two seating areas consist of concrete cubes and are between the Water Street and Laurel Street bridges.

All improvements were completed in accordance with recommendations in the City’s adopted 2003 San Lorenzo Urban River Plan and meet the goals of improving the scenic and recreational value of the San Lorenzo River. They are designed to create a more exciting and inviting environment along the most urban reach of the San Lorenzo River Parkway in the downtown commercial core of the City. Each element is designed to be as resilient as feasible to ensure its long-term functionality and use.

Three interpretive signs will be installed this spring. Re-vegetation is the final project element to be completed before 2019 dependent upon drought conditions. Plantings will occur on the riverbank area on the landward side of the levee. They will consist of native, drought tolerant species to provide erosion control.

The San Lorenzo River Parkway Phase II Project is funded by a $500,000 grant from the California Natural Resources Agency’s River Parkways Grant Program. The project contractor is Monterey Peninsula Engineering.

Phase I of the San Lorenzo River Parkway Project was completed in 2004. It consisted of replacement and enhancement of the path along Laurel Street Extension.
