SANTA CRUZ — The City of Santa Cruz welcomes all Eastside residents and business owners to the first City Hall to You community forum on Thursday, Feb. 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Santa Cruz Bible Church, 440 Frederick St. The event is the first in a new quarterly series designed to strengthen community connectedness by providing opportunity for citizens to interact with City leaders and staff on topics specific to their neighborhood.
“The City Council created City Hall to You as a means of improving responsiveness to our constituents,” said Vice Mayor Cynthia Chase. “It is designed for the public to voice concerns and ask questions. This form of dialogue will help us better understand and address specific neighborhood issues. My hope is that community members will walk away knowing that their voice is important and where to go and who to talk to at the City for any future need.”
Eastside City Hall to You begins and ends with an open house featuring 14 City booths. Midway through the program there will be a 30-minute presentation by Vice Mayor Cynthia Chase, Police Chief Kevin Vogel, Planning Director Juliana Rebagliati and City Manager Martín Bernal followed by a 30-minute question and answer period. Attendees will have further opportunity to dialogue with councilmembers and department heads, as well as engineers, planners and other City staff during the open house portions of the event.
Eastside-specific booth displays will include preliminary East Cliff Drive realignment plans to address the eroding cliff, current and proposed affordable housing, interactive park maps where the public can express what changes they would like to see added to the Parks Master Plan and Branciforte Library programs and resources.
Transportation Manager Jim Burr will present information on the Broadway Pedestrian Crossing Project and the Eastside portion of the Santa Cruz Citywide Safe Routes to School Crossing Improvement Program. Code compliance specialists will be available to answer questions on filing zoning and building complaints or inquiries, the residential rental inspection program and dealing with nuisance situations.
Police Chief Kevin Vogel, along with the City’s two deputy police chiefs, will be present to discuss public safety concerns. Disaster preparedness and fire safety information will also be presented. The Economic Development Department will host a display regarding Santa Cruz Fiber. Public Works tables will include Murray Street Bridge Retrofit plans, 2016 pavement plans to rehabilitate Eastside streets and details regarding the street sweeping program.
There will be a Corridor Planning and Rezoning Project booth with staff available to discuss the plan to integrate corridor land-use planning and multi-modal transportation improvements that will achieve the land-use vision expressed in the General Plan. The Water Department will provide information on water main replacement projects and conservation programs including rebates.
Following our Eastside forum, City Hall to You will highlight three additional City quadrants: Westside, Downtown and the Upper Eastside. These 2016 forum dates, times and locations will soon be announced.
