SANTA CRUZ — The City of Santa Cruz begins the Front Street/Pacific Avenue Historic Wall Preservation project on Monday, Jan. 23, to rehabilitate the Lanterncliff Wall. The project will remove the existing rail and piers, construct a new guardrail, repair the wall and replace the sidewalk as needed.
Front Street will be closed to through traffic from Third Street to Pacific Avenue at the top of the wall beginning Tuesday, Jan. 24, until Memorial Day. Construction may be completed earlier, weather permitting. On-street parking will be removed for the duration of the project. Pedestrian and emergency access will not be affected.
This project is contracted with CRW Industries Inc. who has a long track record of historic preservation projects and will be taking great care to protect and restore the historic nature of Lanterncliff Wall. Numerous stones at the top and face of the wall have fallen and been removed over time with some currently loose due to vegetation and age of the wall. The rail on the top of the wall has deteriorated significantly triggering safety concerns.
This Front Street/Pacific Avenue Historic Wall Preservation project is funded by the City’s Capital Improvement Program FY 2017 for approximately $296,000.
