Change to City ordinance impacting fires on beaches

Post Date:03/30/2017 8:37 AM

A change to the existing City ordinance regarding fires on beaches will take effect May 2017 which allow propane and butane barbecues only. Charcoal barbecues will no longer be allowed on our City beaches. This is in large part due to safety and environmental concerns related to people burying coals in the sand after a barbecue on the beach The Parks and Recreation Department appreciates your compliance with the ordinance and your help informing our community and visitors to our beaches of the change.

The exact wording of the ordinance is listed below:

No person shall set or maintain any fires in any park except in barbecue grills or stoves provided therefore by the city. No person shall set or maintain any fires on any beach except in clean burning propane or butane barbecue grills or stoves with stable legs that can be raised at least six inches off the sand with gas cylinder not to exceed 20 pounds or with a special permit issued by the Director of Parks and Recreation.
