SANTA CRUZ — The City of Santa Cruz is scheduled to begin the Eastside Alley Sewer Project to  replace sanitary sewer mains in the streets and alleys bounded by Prospect Heights, Trevethan Avenue, Allerton Street, Morrissey Boulevard and Pacheco Avenue. Construction is slated to begin Monday, May 15, and is expected to be completed in September. Work by K. J. Woods Construction, Inc. will occur Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding legal holidays.

Two-way traffic will remain in effect, however, there will be delays and at times vehicles will be detoured. Parking around the construction area will also be restricted during the sewer upgrade. Access to alleys will be restricted during replacement of the sanitary sewer mains in the alleys. Alleys will be accessible at the end of each work day.

All attempts will be made to minimize delays for drivers of children going to and from DeLaveaga Elementary School. Still, given the construction work, it is recommended that drivers allow extra time for student drop-offs and pick-ups.

The project replaces about 7,500 lineal feet of existing 6-inch diameter clay sewer pipeline with new 8-inch diameter polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipeline. The new PVC pipe will improve sewer pipeline performance and reliability as the existing pipe is failing.

The cost of this project, approximately $1,500,000, is funded through sewer use rates.

Any concerns or questions may be addressed to project managers Dan Estranero at (831) 420-5189 or destranero@cityofsantacruz.com, and Desiree Douville at (831) 420-5183 or ddouville@cityofsantacruz.com.
