July Is Parks Make Life Better Month

Post Date:06/26/2017 10:00 AM

July Is Parks Make Life Better Month! The Parks and Recreation Department will be offering FREE events throughout the month of July. Choose from a wide array of activities for all ages and interests.

Cowell Beach sandy Point Aerial View

Our City’s beaches are some of our favorite “parks” where there is no shortage of fun to be had. All ages can learn to surf at Dry Land Surf Clinic taught by Club Ed Surf School.Young folks may want to jump into action at Teen Glow-in-the-Dark Volleyball and it’s fun for everyone to get bundled up on Wednesday nights to watch Movies on the Beach.

Rec Swim

While most of our JULY IS activities are fun for the whole family, there are several events that families with children shouldn’t miss. Harvey West Pool hosts recreation swim day which is open to all ages. Experience pure magic as you swan dive into glittery crystal blue water surrounded by tall redwood trees. Crazy Carnival Fun is back at Louden Nelson this summer with sack races, a huge inflatable slide, face painting and more. And if you don’t want to deal with making dinner on a Friday night, come to our Food Truck event. Parks and Recreation Camp staff will lead activities and games with the kids while you get a chance to relax, sip on local beer or wine and get some great food truck fixin’s!

JULY IS also offers opportunities to explore the natural beauty and history of our wonderful City. Join the Walking Adventure Group to stroll the San Lorenzo Riverwalk along with the Coastal Watershed Council. Walk through downtown with City Arborist and Urban Forester Leslie Keedy to learn about the many significant trees. Join our Park Rangers on a leisurely hike through Pogonip along the Box Spring Trail. We also offer a behind-the-scenes tour of the Civic Auditorium where you can learn about the building’s colorful past and exciting plans for its future.

Ping Pong

JULY IS brings the perfect opportunity to start learning or improving your skills at lawn bowling, ping pong and tennis. Twilight Lawn Bowling at San Lorenzo Park is free over three Wednesday evenings in July. The Ping Pong Club offers professional tables, lively competitors and the perfect practice location at the Depot Freight Building. Tennis clinics for both adults and kids are offered at Santa Cruz High from our long-time class instructor Cal Honda.

Details on all of these activities and more are available at Remember, JULY IS a time for your life to become better through your City parks!
