New Planning and Community Development Director Appointed
Santa Cruz, CA — Santa Cruz City Manager Martín Bernal has announced the appointment of Lee Butler to the position of Planning and Community Development Director for the City of Santa Cruz. Mr. Butler will assume his new position on July 31, 2017.Mr. Butler brings over 16 years of planning experience in medium to large size organizations in both urban as well as suburban environments. Mr. Butler comes to Santa Cruz from the City of Santa Clara where he serves as Planning Manager. In his leadership role there, he has overseen development of several large development projects and ushered in a multifaceted approach to community engagement, including traditional and new outreach platforms. Prior to his work in Santa Clara, he served as the Development Services Manager for the City of Gilroy, where he led the General Plan update efforts, and began his career in several planning and economic development services positions for the City of San Jose. Throughout his career, he has helped bridge gaps between diverse development disciplines to facilitate and streamline permitting, promote economic development, and improve customer service.
Mr. Butler holds a Bachelor Degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of Virginia and has completed master’s level classes in public budgeting and management. Mr. Butler is an American Institute Certified Planner as well as U.S. Green Building Council, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional with specialty in building design and construction (LEED AP, BD+C).
Mr. Butler resides in the City of Santa Cruz along with his wife and young daughter.
