Riverwalk Lighting Project Receives Grant Funding
The City of Santa Cruz has been awarded $952,000 for the Riverwalk Lighting Project from the California Active Transportation Program Cycle 3 grant program. This funding is made possible by Senate Bill 1: Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
The project will install LED-pedestrian scale lighting between Water Street and Highway 1 on the east and west banks of the San Lorenzo River path. The new lighting is intended to increase safety for people walking and biking by reducing path user crashes. The project is also intended to increase active transportation options for users of all ages and abilities by extending the hours when more people are expected to use the pathway.
This project is part of the Go Santa Cruz initiative – the City’s ongoing effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and play an active role in addressing the issue of climate change. Go Santa Cruz promotes numerous transportation options within the City of Santa Cruz and encourages residents to try biking, walking, carpooling and transit for their daily trips. Go Santa Cruz includes the City’s ongoing work to expand bike and pedestrian facilities and also provides education and encouragement, increases transportation options and leverages partnerships with other transportation agencies.
