SANTA CRUZ —The City of Santa Cruz is now accepting applications for its inaugural Master Recycler Training Program. Over six sessions from Feb. 6 to March 13 participants will train to become “Master Recyclers” in areas related to waste reduction and recycling. They will graduate as community champions with certification to educate and empower friends, neighbors, schools, businesses, local groups, and special events to waste less and “recycle right.”
The new free-of-charge program is a response to the record number of attendees at recent Recycling Center tours who expressed interest in helping to mitigate the largest Santa Cruz (and nationwide) recycling problem of contamination. The Master Recycler Training Program follows successful templates created by the City of Burbank and municipalities in Oregon, Colorado and Ohio.
Throughout six Tuesday evening sessions, participants will receive hands-on training from City of Santa Cruz Resource Recovery staff and other local waste professionals and experts. Class topics include waste prevention, recycling processes and markets, Zero Waste concepts, Extended Producer Responsibility, household hazardous waste, repairing and repurposing items, and green consumer tips. Two Saturday morning field trips will provide a behind-the-scenes look at sorted and baled recyclable material, large and small scale composting systems, and electronic waste management.
Course graduates will emerge with agreement to put their new skills into practice through a minimum of 20 hours of community service. They will be invited to support Earth Day and reuse and repair events, serve as neighborhood resources at block parties and as waste monitors and outreach coordinators at special events.
Advanced program registration is required. Applications will be accepted from all Santa Cruz residents at least 18 years of age and are due by 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1. Applications can be downloaded at www.cityofsantacruz.com/recycleright.
