In its fourth year, the Santa Cruz Recycled Art Program (SCRAP) is an artist residency that grants local artists of varied disciplines the opportunity to expand creatively and conceptually through access to a vast array of unexpected materials gleaned from the waste stream at the City’s Resource Recovery Facility. The experience provides artists with an experimental shift from traditional media to materials which convey stories of cultural behavior. Artists are inspired to make statements on the environmental impact of human consumption, educate on waste management practices, and urge the public to reconsider choices in waste disposal.

This year we have 6 residents who have approached this concept from a variety of unique perspectives. Featured artists are Andrew Purchin, Angela Gleason, Janet Fine, Jody Alexander, Paige Davis, and Pamela Dewey. This year’s fascinating show will include an interactive and humorous altar to “Sapiens” by their devoted trash people, video, photography, assemblage art, a tiny house, giant Pick Up-Sticks, jewelry and an alchemist’s library of tar paper books!

Artwork will range from the poignant—exploring themes of housing and homelessness to a cultural worship of consumption—to the more ethereal and fun – including a “dump dollar store” for purchasing usable cast-offs - to quilts made from unusual materials!

The Opening Reception is Friday, Dec. 6, 5 - 9 p.m. at the R. Blitzer Gallery – located in the former Wrigley gum factory building at 2801 Mission St., Santa Cruz CA.

The artists will share their experiences during an Artist Talk in the gallery on Sunday, Dec.  8, 2-4 p.m.

SCRAP is a program of Santa Cruz City Arts and the Santa Cruz City Arts Commission in partnership with the City’s Public Works Department and the Resource Recovery Facility.
