Lifeguard service is provided during Spring weekends, daily in Summer months and Fall weekends. Service hours are usually from 10:00 - 7:00, but may vary depending on the weather conditions. Service area is from Cowell’s Beach to the San Lorenzo River.
Fires are not allowed on any City Beaches, which include Cowells Beach, Main Beach & beaches along Westcliff Drive. See where you can have beach fires and BBQ's.
2017 Intent to Return Packet - Returning Lifeguards
Requalification Swim - March 4th, 11th & 18th at 0800hrs @ LGHQ
Mandatory Training (no exceptions) - ALL-HANDS TRAINING - June 12th & one March weekend recurrent training.
Beach Lifeguard I (open) 15.03-16.57/hour - Tryouts are March 4th and March 11th at LGHQ at 0800 (check in starts at 0730) with interviews on March 5th and 12th at 1300. Applications are due by or at the tryout. Under close supervision, works with other lifeguards and staff to provide ocean safety and emergency medical assistance to the public (Jr. Lifeguard Instructors must first apply as a Beach Lifeguard I).
Beach Lifeguard II & JG Lifeguard II (open) $14.9891 - $18.2215/hour - Promotional interview will be held early this year, on February 23rd. Under supervision, acts as a lead position for other seasonal lifeguards and assists with supervising, coaching and training of Beach Lifeguard I employees. Assignments may include dispatch, vehicle and break shifts. The incumbent is required to possess an EMT/AED certification and will respond to medical emergencies in the beach area.
JG Lieutenant (closed) $15.6386 - $19.0094/hour
Under general supervision, assists in supervising, planning, organizing and coordinating the daily activities and operation of the Marine Safety Division.
Marine Rescue Unit Member (closed) $50/24-hour shift (Hourly wage for training and emergency response: $12.59 - $15.31) This unit provides 24-hour response to ocean related emergencies and rescues throughout the year. Employees are required to live within a 10-minute response time to the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf and have a strong aquatic background. Prior ocean lifeguarding experience is highly desirable. Applications are accepted year round. Testing is held and positions are filled as needed.
