Welcome to the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, A Cornerstone of Our Community

  Celebrating 75 Years!

On March 28, 1940, a three-day fete celebrated the grand opening of the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. Some 5,000 members of the community toured the Auditorium that first day, peeking into meeting rooms, trying out the seats, and marveling at its newness and the promise of things to come.

Constructed at a cost of roughly $275,000, the Civic was funded in large part by a grant from the federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) which provided employment opportunities through public works projects from coast to coast.

On alternate occasions since opening day, the Civic Auditorium has been a sports arena, theater, concert hall, ice skating rink, town hall, convention center, exhibition hall, dance hall, sound stage, banquet room, ceremonial hall, movie theater, Red Cross shelter, graduation hall and more.

The Civic's 75 years of service have reflected the growth and change in our community and in the world at large. To unravel the thread of Auditorium history is to journey a civic and cultural timeline of the latter half of the twentieth century.

Save the Date!
