Energy Conservation and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Projects

In April 1998, the City of Santa Cruz joined the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP). The CCP is comprised of 500 local governments around the world making an effort to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases within their communities and making a concerted effort to stop global warming. The CCP Campaign includes implementation of measures at the local level in the transportation, energy and waste sectors.

Currently, the City is implementing a wide variety of energy conservation and greenhouse gas emissions reduction measures and projects in the following sectors or locations: Transportation, Energy Use, Waste Reduction, Wastewater Treatment Facility, and the Resource Recovery Facility (landfill). Please click on the “Measures in Place” link below to find out more about these measures and projects.

The City of Santa Cruz generated energy from renewable sources equivalent to 33% of the electricity used in City facilities. In addition, the City receives 13% renewable energy purchased from PG&E. Thus, the combined total equals a City-wide renewable portfolio of over 40%! As more GHG reduction measures are implemented, the City of Santa Cruz will become less dependent on energy sources that cause environmental degradation.
