About Water Conservation

Water is a precious natural resource that is vital to our health and welfare and to the economy of the Central Coast region where we live. In the city of Santa Cruz, we rely entirely on local sources for our community’s drinking water supply.

Because our water supplies are limited, it is important that everyone uses water efficiently. The city of Santa Cruz has had a long-standing commitment to water conservation and offers a variety of programs, informational materials, and incentives to help city water customers become more water-efficient.

California Urban Water Conservation CouncilIn 2000, the city adopted a Water Conservation Plan, the goal of which is to reduce water demand system-wide by 282 million gallons per year in 2010. Through plumbing fixture and appliance rebate programs, technical assistance, regulations, and other strategies, residential and commercial customers have saved over 250 million gallons of water per year so far. The City is also a member of the California Urban Water Conservation Council and is active in promoting water conservation statewide.

In 2013 the Water Conservation Office is working with Maddaus Water Management to develop a new Water Conservation Master Plan. The plan will address the next generation of water conservation activities and serve as a roadmap to help our community achieve maximum, practical water use efficiency.

We invite you to contact the Water Conservation Office at 831-420-5230 or visit web pages listed in the navigation bar to the left of this page for more information about simple and cost-effective ways to improve water use efficiency at your home or business.
