Fish Catches of the WeekThe City of Santa Cruz welcomes you and wishes you a pleasant visit. Be aware that your actions impact the water quality of this drinking water reservoir. It is your responsibility to know the rules of the recreation area and comply with them. All rules will be strictly enforced.

The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) now stocks the reservoir with sterile triploid trout when the park is open. Largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish also maintain populations in the reservoir. All California State Fish and Game regulations apply and City of Santa Cruz - specific limitations on certain types of live bait also apply. Fishing is permitted only when the recreation area is open.

Boat Rental and Supplies: The store is located at the lower parking area. A a substantial boat rental fleet is available for rent on a first come, first serve basis. Rowboats and pedal boats rent for $5.00 an hour and rowboats will electric trolling motors rent for $10.00 an hour. There is a two-hour minimum on all boat rentals. (3-hour minimum for the rowboats with electric trolling motors on weekends and holidays before noon.) Please be aware that pets are not allowed in rental boats. Bait, tackle, fishing licenses, hot and cold drinks, and snacks are also for sale. All boats are due off the reservoir one hour prior to closing.

Boat Restrictions
Due to the concern regarding contamination of the reservoir with aquatic invasive species such as Eurasian mussels, private boat launching will be restricted to allow only boats that are stored at the Loch Lomond Recreation Area.  There is a $25.00 inspection/decontamination fee as well as a $200 annual storage fee. Entrance and launch fees still apply. Annual passes are also available for sale. Space is limited to about 100 boats. (Boat trailer space is not currently available.) Staff can be contacted at 831-335-7424 for more information. A substantial rental fleet is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Picnicking and Hiking:
Picnic areas are provided with tables, barbecues, water, and restrooms. Hiking is permitted on established trails. Trail maps are available free of charge at the entrance station and store. A wildfire anywhere in the recreation area would devastate the reservoir. Barbecues are allowed only in designated picnic areas, and smoking is allowed only in picnic areas, parking lots, and along the shoreline.

General Rules and Regulations:

  • No alcohol or firearms
  • No swimming, wading, or float tubes
  • Dogs on leash only - no swimming
  • Boats must use docks
  • All State Fish and Game rules enforced
  • No bicycles off paved roads
  • Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult
  • Only private boats participating in the boat storage program are allowed
  • No use of aquatic live baits (i.e. frogs, crawfish, minnows, etc).    
  • Use restrooms and trash cans
  • All natural features protected by law
