Amplified Sound

The City of Santa Cruz no longer issues permits for the use of amplified sound. However, the City’s noise ordinance (SCMC 9.36) and amplified sound ordinance (SCMC 9.40) are strictly enforced.

When planning a street performance, private party, or any other rally, event, or gathering that may involve amplified sound or loud noise, the following guidelines should be considered: 

  • Be aware that amplified sound is not allowed before 8:00 am and after 10:00 pm
  • Be aware that complaints of unreasonably loud noises or sounds may result in a law enforcement response, citation, and/or cancellation of the event.
  • All lawful orders by members of SCPD or other law enforcement agencies must be observed and followed.
  • Event planners should notify neighbors and/or surrounding businesses in advance of an event and strive to coordinate activities and mitigate concerns.

Commercial businesses in the City of Santa Cruz that are interested in having events utilizing amplified sound should contact the City Planning Department at 831-420-5416 in advance of any event to determine any applicable land use or permit requirements and/or restrictions.
