Polystyrene (Styrofoam TM) Block Packaging is now accepted at Grey Bears. You may drop off block packaging at the Grey Bears Recycling Center, 2710 Chanticleer Avenue, Santa Cruz. Block polystyrene must be clean and dry, and please, no food containers, sheet polystyrene or packing peanuts. Grey Bears is operating a machine that will densify the foam before it is sent to a recycler.
"To-Go" Food Service Ware
The Environmentally Acceptable Food Packaging and Products Ordinance requires that food providers within the City of Santa Cruz may not use "to-go" disposable food service ware that contains polystyrene expanded plastic foam and non-recyclable rigid polystyrene (#6 PS) food containers.
All food providers within the City of Santa Cruz utilizing disposable food service ware including beverage lids and cutlery shall use biodegradable or compostable products or products that are accepted in the City of Santa Cruz recycling program.
All food providers may only give straws, lids, cutlery, and to-go condiment packages upon request of the customer.

Packing Peanuts: Polystyrene packing peanuts are not accepted for recycling and should be contained in a bag and placed in the trash. Note: The UPS stores no longer accept any type of packing peanuts from the public for reuse. The company made an environmental decision to discontinue the use on packing peanuts at all locations throughout the U.S. They do accept bubble wrap and other packing material.
