Museum of Art and History
There’s new energy at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History (MAH), and it appears to be radiating from Executive Director Nina Simon, who took the helm at MAH just over a year ago.
Simon and her team have transformed the MAH into a lively destination, with admission-free days, hands-on projects, and a calendar crammed with special events. There are live concerts, interactive exhibits, and even more places to sit. And the museum is now open until 9 p.m. on Friday nights.
“I came in with a mandate to transform the MAH into a community hub,” Simon said. “It’s not just about fine art and history; it’s about actively participating with creativity and culture.”
The changes have been a huge hit, with the number of visitors more than doubling to 37,361 this year. Family memberships have increased from 1,300 to 1,760, and student visits are up by nearly 1,000.
In addition, more than 800 community members have collaborated with MAH staff to produce events in the past year, from the popular First Friday Art Walk to the new Third Friday Theme Nights.
Recent themed events have included Radical Crafts Night, and a Local History Scavenger Hunt. To see what’s happening next, visit the MAH website.
