SANTA CRUZ, CA – The 33rd Annual Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off gets underway at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk this Saturday, February 22, 2014. Professional and amateur chefs will prepare sixty-five clam chowders. Both Manhattan (red) and Boston (white) chowders will be available.
Admission to the rain or shine event is free; tasting kits are $9 for 5 samples. Preparation and cooking start at 10am, tasting starts at 1pm. Winners will be announced at 4pm. Visitors are advised to arrive before noon for the popular event.
Last year the Clam Chowder Cook-Off raised more than $62,000 for City of Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Department programs; more than $1M has been raised since 1981. The Boardwalk works closely with Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation staff to coordinate the well-attended cook-off.
Local restaurants hoping to bring home the gold include Ideal Bar and Grill, Aquarius, Severino’s Bar & Grill, South Beach Pizza, the Buttery, and Rocky’s Café. Out-of-town competitors will arrive from as far afield as Sacramento and Clovis.
Hoping to bring home an award for Most Original Team, cooking teams such as Manhattan Madhatters, Silence of the Clams, Rack of Clams, Clam Halen, 4 Men and a Clam, and Souper-Clamifragilisticexpeialidocous should raise the bar for creativity.
Boardwalk rides are scheduled to open from 11am to 6pm on the day of the event, weather permitting. For more information please visit http://www.beachboardwalk.com/clamchowder/
