Describe the Event:

At 8:11 P.M. Santa Cruz Fire station one was dispatched to a vehicle accident involving a power pole. Upon arrival crews found a mid size pickup truck that had hit a parking sign and fence and continued into a large power pole. The pole was completely sheered off at the base and snapped in half bringing the entire pole and wires to the ground. Wires were on the ground, vehicles and on several houses for a 2 block area. Santa Cruz Police assisted with evacuation and keeping traffic and pedestrians out of the area. The driver and occupants fled the scene and the police department is questioning several people who may have been involved. No injuries were found. The accident triggered a major power outage in the downtown area and Seabright nationhood. Numerous calls were being handled by the remanding Santa Cruz Fire units and mutual aid from Scotts Valley. There were fire alarms being reported and elevators in the downtown area that had become stuck. The area near the Boardwalk was shut down to traffic to allow the cleanup to proceed.
At 6:15 P.M. fire and police responded to a vehicle accident on East cliff Drive near the river for a head on crash. Both vehicles sustained major damage and all parties refused medical treatment. East cliff was shut down in both directions for about an hour as oil and coolant was picked up by the fire crews.
