All City Councilmembers are appreciative of the outpouring of support that our Police Department has received, as we, like you, have been dealing with the tragedy of last Tuesday afternoon.
We as a community continue to mourn the loss of our fallen officers Butch Baker and Elizabeth Butler. They were exemplary police officers and we have learned over the past few days that their ultimate sacrifice likely saved many community members’ lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and the entire Santa Cruz Police Department.
Tuesday's events have resulted in our community's need to process the grief over the loss of two of our finest police officers and we all do that differently. Our responsibility to you is to assure to that the safety of the citizens of Santa Cruz must not be compromised regardless of circumstances. Our Police Department has tapped the resources of other law enforcement agencies in the area to assure uninterrupted public safety services.
You have no doubt noticed the County Sheriff officers and the California Highway Patrol officers patrolling our streets and responding to calls the past few days. We owe both agencies our thanks for their mutual aid response to our call for assistance while our own police force was dealing with the tragedy of the loss of two of their ranks. We will continue to provide the same level of law enforcement services in Santa Cruz as we did prior to Tuesday’s tragedy and as of this morning, our Santa Cruz police officers are back on patrol. As you see them, please wave, say thanks, and otherwise acknowledge your support.
Our Police Department has received an absolute outpouring of support from around the community and world. We are so thankful for that, as thousands of individuals and various organizations have asked how they can help. We would like to guide that energy towards a donation fund established by the City and the Police Officers Association for the fallen officer's families. You can donate by going to the City’s website www.cityofsantacruz.com
I thank you all in advance for your generosity. If you would like to share your thoughts with the Police Department, visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/santacruzpolice

As a community we had begun to develop a strategy to address public safety concerns and those efforts are all the more important now. Together we will honor our fallen police officers and recognize the profound impact this loss has had on every member of the Santa Cruz Police Department. And in the coming weeks, we will develop next steps to understand how we can move forward united.
Thank you for your continued support and show of love for our Santa Cruz Police Department.
