SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Visit the Santa Cruz Wharf, Saturday, June 22, and you’ll take a stroll down memory lane at the 19th annual Woodies on the Wharf. One of the California’s largest displays of the classic surf cars, Woodies on the Wharf will feature more than 200 cars, which were made between 1915 and 1952. These stylish and lovingly maintained cars will be on display at the wharf from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Plus, there’s music, prize drawings and the spectacular backdrop of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Monterey Bay and the beach. Admission is free!

“We grew up with these cars,” said Rowland Baker, one of the founders of the Santa Cruz Woodie Club and director of the first Woodies on the Wharf. “Many of them were running to the beaches here in the 60’s while we were trying to ride our bikes with our longboards under our arms,” said Baker, a Santa Cruz native.

“When a few of us got together and thought about having a display of old woodies as they related to the Santa Cruz Surf culture, we never thought it would grow into one of the largest gathering of wooden cars in America,” said Baker.

“The City of Santa Cruz has really embraced this show and truly made woodie owners feel welcome as they come in from across the United States to attend this event. Their support of the show has allowed us to give thousands of dollars back to the local community.” Over the years the club has supported the City lifeguard PWC program, Ken Wormhoudt Skate Park and the Hawaiian Princes Plaque at the Surfing Museum.

Rowland continues to be an avid surfer and has owned a woodie for over 25 years.

“Times have changed, but not the love for old woodies,” said Baker. “Woodies on the Wharf epitomizes Santa Cruz surf culture at its finest.”

Admission is FREE! Music, woodie goodies and prize drawings will add to the fun. Plus FREE bike valet is available. For details, call 831-420-5273 or visit www.santacruzwharf.com.

Woodies on the Wharf is presented by the Santa Cruz Woodies, a chapter of the National Woodie Club, the Wharf Association and the City of Santa Cruz.
