City of Santa Cruz expands opportunities to learn about water supply

RESIDENTS ARE INVITED TO CITY-SPONSORED EVENTS, INCLUDING TREATMENT PLANT TOUR, HISTORY TOUR, SAN LORENZO RIVER PADDLE TOUR, AND A TALK BY CALIFORNIA NATURAL RESOURCES SECRETARY JOHN LAIRD.

The City of Santa Cruz announces its providing several upcoming opportunities for residents to learn about our local water system, watershed and state-level water issues:

Saturday, October 12, 1-4pm: the public is invited to view the first-ever San Lorenzo River Paddle Tour, co-sponsored with the Coastal Watershed Council. The tour will paddle down the river from the County Building to the Boardwalk and back. The event will also highlight the flora and fauna associated with the river, as well as its watershed role and potential as a community recreation resource.

Thursday, October 17, 10am-12pm: the public is invited to tour to the Graham Hill Treatment Plant. Learn about the water sources that serve the Santa Cruz region, how water is treated before delivery, and the complex system that delivers water to your tap. Monday, October 28: Santa Cruz water historian Melanie Mayer will lead an informational and entertaining tour of the history of the water system in Santa Cruz. Participants will visit locations of early indigenous settlements, sources that fed missionaries, and early sources for the present-day Santa Cruz water supply. Saturday, November 2, 10:00am: the public is invited for coffee and to hear California Natural Resources Secretary John Laird provide an update on the state of water in California. Louden Nelson Community Center, 301 Center Street.
