Santa Cruz, CA – Today the City of Santa Cruz opened the application period for the new, 14-member Water Supply Advisory Committee. The City Council formed the Committee to serve as the lead and clearinghouse of the community engagement effort around the City’s water supply options. Applications are available online at www.cityofsantacruz.com/wsac
and through the Office of the City Manager and the Water Department. Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, January 15, 2014.
“The Committee’s work is critically important to the process of developing recommendations for consideration by the City Council,” said Mayor Lynn Robinson. “We’re very encouraged by the initial community interest in this process and are confident the Committee will have well-qualified representatives from throughout the Santa Cruz water service area.”
Over the course of a year, the Committee’s work will be robust, demanding and technical in pursuit of water supply recommendations to be presented to the City Council. During that time the Committee will be tasked with exploring the City’s water profile including supply, demand and future threats through a fact-based process, and analyze potential solutions to deliver a safe, adequate, reliable and environmentally sustainable water supply.
Given the importance of this work, the City is seeking broad community representation on the Committee with individuals who will bring an open mind to the process. The make-up of the Water Supply Advisory Committee will include:
• 3 representatives each from environmental and business groups
• 3 at-large Santa Cruz City residents
• 1 non-City resident water customer
• 1 representative from Desal Alternatives
• 1 representative of the Sustainable Water Coalition
• 2 members of the City Water Commission
Applications will be reviewed by the City Council Nominating Committee, which will provide the City Council with a list of nominees for review and acceptance in February.
