SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Extending half a mile into the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary, the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf provides unique opportunities for marine access, recreation and research. In 2014, the Wharf turns 100 years old! The City is hosting several community celebrations for the Wharf Centennial and a highlight is the Sanctuary Celebration on Saturday, May 17, 2014.

Sponsored by the City of Santa Cruz, Friends of Parks & Recreation, UCSC and Bay Photo, Sandbar Solar and more, the free, family-friendly, festival-style event will feature local environmental organizations, artists, crafters and musicians, providing a fun, interactive, and educational experience. Storytellers, bird spotters, marine experts, boatmakers, ecotour guides, fish cleaners, and landscapers building a native plant parklet will also be on hand to create a diverse and rich cultural event. Secretary Leon Panetta is invited to attend, schedule permitting.

This carbon neutral celebration will engage the community with the Wharf and what a unique access point it provides to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The annual event will continue the 100-year legacy of forging and strengthening community relationships. In keeping with the recent Wharf Master Planning focus on sustainability of the Wharf, community members are encouraged to use the planned bike valet or walk to the event.
