Longtime City Attorney John Barisone to Retire in 2015
SANTA CRUZ (June 5, 2014) – As he prepares to mark a major milestone in his career as City Attorney for Santa Cruz, John Barisone will retire next year from the post he has held for nearly a quarter century.
“It has been my privilege to serve this extraordinary city,” said Barisone. “I have worked with gifted employees and public officials devoted to making Santa Cruz a better place. I am proud to have shared so many years with them.”
During his tenure as City Attorney beginning in 1990, Barisone has seen the city’s population grow by 20 % and served 12 different city councils. He advised elected officials through major landmark initiatives including greenbelt enhancements and the UC Santa Cruz Comprehensive Settlement Agreement, which has become a model of collaboration for cities and universities across the country.
“John’s steady hand and straightforward style has served the city well for decades,” said Santa Cruz Mayor Lynn Robinson. “I know I speak for the entire council as I thank him for his outstanding service and wish him a happy and healthy future retirement.”
The law firm of Atchison, Barisone, Condotti & Kovacevich has served as the city’s contracted law firm for 50 years. The council will consider a new agreement with the firm at the meeting of June 24th.
