SANTA CRUZ (July 1, 2014) – After a nationwide search, Laura Schmidt has been named Director of Information Technology for the City of Santa Cruz. Schmidt currently serves as Chief Information Management Officer for Washoe County, Nevada.
“Laura has an accomplished career in IT strategy and customer service,” said City Manager Martin Bernal. “She is a leader with an innovative approach to business success and employee development. I am pleased to welcome her to Santa Cruz.”
At Washoe County, Schmidt leads a staff of 80 in the Technology Services Department. She manages technology and fiscal matters for the county’s full spectrum of IT services and two special funds that include regional 911 and a public safety radio communication network. She most recently led a regional effort to launch a common permits and licensing platform for Washoe County, Washoe District Health and the cities of Reno and Sparks. Prior to her work at Washoe County, Schmidt served in IT roles at Andersen Consulting, Hewlett-Packard and International Game Technology.

Schmidt earned her B.A. from the University of the Pacific and received certification from the Government Chief Information Officers program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She begins duties in Santa Cruz on July 28.
