Describe the Event:

Late Sunday afternoon Santa Cruz Fire Units began responding to numerous surfers in distress at Mitchell’s Cove on West cliff Drive. There were 3 separate incidents that we responded to. The first was a report of 2 surfers struggling to exit the water. Upon our arrival the surfers were out on the beach with no medical needs. A third surfer, while crews were still on the scene, became unable to get back out past the breakers and was becoming fatigued. Santa Cruz Fire Department Lifeguards responded with a personal water craft and were directed to the surfer who then was assisted out of the surf zone while riding on the rescue vessel. He was delivered to the beach exhausted and refused medical treatment. One hour later a female boogie boarder became fatigued and was rescued by a bystander and pulled up onto the rocks at the above location. Fire department paramedics and rescue swimmers assisted the female up the cliff. She also refused any medical treatment. A third rescue was reported at the San Lorenzo river mouth that a female was unconscious in the water. Upon the arrival of the fire department, it was determined that there was no rescue and no medical needs.
The fire department was assisted by State Parks. The fire department personal water craft remained patrolling the area until dusk. The large surf and strong currents contributed to the numerous rescue calls.
