UPCOMING DRAFT GENERAL PLAN 2030 HEARINGS
The Planning and Community Development Department is pleased to announce that the City of Santa Cruz will soon begin the formal process for the draft General Plan 2030 (GP 2030). The City Planning Commission is required by state law to provide a recommendation to the City Council for final adoption for GP2030. A general plan is a comprehensive, long range and internally consistent statement of a city's development and preservation policies. It sums up the City's philosophy of growth and preservation, highlights what is important to the community, and prescribes where different kinds of development should go. State law requires that cities prepare general plans and regularly review and update them. The preparation of the draft GP 2030 was a community based process led by a 17 member General Plan Advisory Committee who met publicly 77 times between 2006 and 2008.
The approval process will begin with the Planning Commission who will hold a public hearing on May 17th at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers. The Commission will also continue to meet beginning at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers on May 24th and if necessary May 31st. It is anticipated that the City Council will hold public hearings to consider the Planning Commission's recommendation on the draft GP 2030 as well as the Final Environmental Impact Report on June 26th and July if needed.
