What is the right amount to water your lawn?

Lawn being watered Lawns require more water than any other landscape plant, but their water needs change throughout the year. In the Santa Cruz area, lawns need irrigation only twice a week, or every third day, during the dry season. The total length of time for each watering cycle should be longer in the warmest part of the summer and shorter during the spring and fall.
Watering Gauge Download a Lawn Watering Guide with easy 3-step instructions for calculating the optimum lawn watering schedule for your sprinkler system, by doing a catch can test. Contact the Water Conservation Office at 420-5230 to borrow a set of catch cans to perform the test.
Irrigation Controller We recommend you re-program your controller each season, based on the Lawn Watering Guide. During the winter, irrigation should be turned off except during extended dry periods.
