Describe the Event:

Santa Cruz Fire Department responded an engine to a smoke check in the area of Harvey West Park and was updated with information of a wild land fire on the hillside behind the cemetery. The response was upgraded to a full wild land response and units re-directed to Sheldon Ave for best access to the fire. The first arriving crews found the fire to have run up the hill behind the residences on the 200 block of Sheldon Ave. Firefighters pulled hose lines to attack the fire and were able to prevent further spread of the fire. It took 6 engines and 1 hand crew 3 hours to fully control the fire and overhaul hot spots as the terrain was extremely steep. Fire investigators determined the fire to be an accidental fire, in an illegal campsite and it was caused by smoking materials found at scene. The size of the fire was approximately ½ acre in and consumed brush, slash and down trees/vegetation.
