Describe the Event:

Memorial Day weekend brought large crowds and warm weather to both Santa Cruz and Capitola beaches. The Marine Safety Division Lifeguards were kept busy with more than 60,000 visitors over the weekend to both beaches. Warm weather brought the large crowds along with the Holiday weekend. It also invited people to play in the ocean.

Lifeguards made over 3,000 preventative contacts ensuring that visitors had a safe and fun beach experience. At 7:00 PM on 5/26/14 Lifeguards at the Main Beach in Santa Cruz made simultaneous rescues of three people. All three were in the water and having difficulty swimming. One was transported by ambulance to Dominican Hospital for near drowning.

At the same time Santa Cruz Lifeguards in Capitola assisted two subjects who had been trapped by the incoming tide on rocks North of the Capitola Wharf. They worked with a rescue swimmer from Central Fire to bring both subjects back to the beach safely.
