Santa Cruz Schools Celebrate Graduation with Less Waste

SANTA CRUZ (June 10, 2014) –Seven Santa Cruz schools are hosting graduation ceremonies this month with less waste thanks to Dori Poles and colorful pennants borrowed from the City of Santa Cruz Public Works Department.

Decorations for graduations and other special events often generate extra trash and cause problems for the environment. Balloons used at these festivities can get loose and end up on local beaches or in the ocean.

As an alternative to balloons and other waste-generating decorations, the Department of Public Works offers schools no-cost Dori Poles and pennants. Dori Poles are fiberglass flag-mounting devices that can be used with colorful cloth pennants again and again, leaving nothing for the trash can after the event.

Schools using the City’s Dori Poles and pennants this month are De Laveaga Elementary School, Costanoa High School, Ark Independent Studies, Alternative Family Education, Gateway School, Delta Charter High School and Cypress Charter High School.

For more information about Dori Poles and the City’s School Recycling and Waste Reduction Program, please call Waste Reduction Manager Mary Simmons at 831.420.5449 or visit: www.cityofsantacruz.com/schoolrecycling.
