SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Get stoked to improve your stroke! Never attempted to paddle much less race in a canoe? Expert paddlers will be on hand to help beginners during the 21st Annual Aloha Outrigger Races at the Santa Cruz Wharf, Sunday, August 18.
Races are specially designed for novices who want to test their skills at the ancient Polynesian art of paddling an outrigger canoe. You create the 4-person team and organizers will provide the canoe, expert strokers, steer people, and safety and technique instruction.
Registration is being accepted at the Parks and Recreation Office, 323 Church Street, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and alternate Fridays. If registering by August 1, entry fee per 4-person team is $100. After August 1, entry fee increases to $120. Entry fee includes four T-shirts per team.
Aloha Races begin at 9 a.m. and will be followed by the free Polynesian Festival at the Wharf stage. The festival features Hawaiian music, Polynesian dance along with fresh flower leis, shave ice, hula dance and more!
