Describe the Event:

At 1:27 P.M. Santa Cruz and UCSC firefighters responded to a vehicle accident at SR 1 and River street. Upon arrival of the fire units, crews found 2 vehicles in the turn lane with major damage and one occupant trapped inside an SUV. Fire crews stabilized the patient while additional crews used the Jaws of Life to pry and cut open the doors to free the occupant. A tow truck was utilized to pull the smaller car away from the SUV so crews could gain access to the patient. All injuries appeared to be minor. The airbags on the SUV activated and prevented additional injuries to the driver. The impact to the SUV was on the driver’s side at the front door and pushed the doors inward almost 12-18 inches. The driver of the smaller vehicle refused treatment and transport to the hospital. The occupant in the SUV was transported to Dominican Hospital. Crews remained on the scene for 45 minutes for cleanup.
