Describe the Event:

At 9:47A.M., Santa Cruz Fire Department responded to a reported brush and tree fire at Highway 17 and Highway 1 near the fishhook. The dispatch center was receiving multiple reports of a fire that was spreading quickly. As responding units were in route, a large column of smoke could be seen from town. The first arriving Battalion Chief observed a fire in grass, brush and the pine trees burning and throwing off numerous embers. A small spot fire was burning about 500 feet from the original fire in light grass. Crews were assigned to attack the fire from Highway 17 and additional crews were sent to the fishhook to start their attack from there. The fire was controlled within 30 minutes and the spread stopped from jumping the highway. The area was overhauled and an investigation revealed the origin to be a homeless camp site. Citizens reported seeing a female running from the area as the fire started. No injuries were reported. Firefighters remained on the scene for 2 hours to make sure all hot spots were out.
