SANTA CRUZ —Is this yogurt tub recyclable or not? What to do with leftover paint? How to dispose of an old refrigerator? These are just a few of the questions answered by the new City of Santa Cruz quick and easy online Recycling Guide. Customized to the City of Santa Cruz, the guide will help residents and businesses learn how to properly recycle or dispose of more than 250 items.
“You can now use your smart phone to figure out what goes where when sorting household waste,” said Waste Reduction Manager Mary Simmons. “We are hopeful that the online guide will reduce the many causes of recycling contamination that can send the contents of an entire blue bin to the landfill.” The guide will also educate regarding toxic substances that when not properly disposed of can pollute local groundwater and waterways.
The Recycling Guide, found at www.cityofsantacruz.com/recycleright allows website visitors to search for local disposal instructions and alternative reuse and recycling options for household items. The guide is simple to use on smartphones and tablets, as well as on desktop computers.
The City developed the new recycling guide in partnership with Recyclist, a Truckee, Calif.-based startup that provides turnkey digital communications solutions to solid waste and recycling programs.
The City of Santa Cruz currently diverts about 67 percent of its waste from the landfill. The online Recycling Guide will help the community reduce, reuse and recycle even more sustainably.
