SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Today, America Recycles Day, four Mission Hill Middle School students were recognized by the City of Santa Cruz as winners of the annual Santa Cruz Recycles poster contest. They were honored in a lunch hour school campus ceremony that included the unveiling of the winning artwork on the sides of City recycling trucks where the artwork is being displayed over the next year.

The winners were Sofia Rosas, Sophia Souza and artwork partners Omi Maxwell and Layla Pasquini—the latter two were Monarch Community School students at the time of submission. Each young artist was awarded a reusable City of Santa Cruz canvas tote bag containing environmentally-friendly prizes.

A fifth student winner is Chiara Rojas of Holy Cross School. She will be recognized in a ceremony at her school campus on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 8 a.m.

The City’s Santa Cruz Recycles poster contest gives local students in grades K-12 a chance to creatively promote recycling in their community.  The colorful winning artwork is displayed on recycling and refuse trucks as they make their rounds through Santa Cruz neighborhoods to reinforce waste reduction messages.

America Recycles Day, a Keep America Beautiful initiative, is the only nationally-recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the U.S. It invites citizens to take the recycling pledge at
