Council to Consider Ordinance to Protect Commercial and Residential Tenants During COVID-19 Outbreak

SANTA CRUZ, CA – The Santa Cruz City Council will consider adopting an ordinance at today’s, March 24, 2020, meeting aimed at protecting commercial and residential tenants who are unable to pay their rent and may be at risk of eviction due to a reduction of income or loss of wages as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As introduced, the goal of the ordinance would be to 1) Protect the health, safety, and welfare of our community; 2) Provide stability to renters during this time of unprecedented economic challenges resulting from the coronavirus health crisis; and 3) Avoid further homelessness and loss of jobs.

Consistent with the State and County’s Stay-at-Home orders, the City is encouraging members of the public to view the City Council meetings from home on the City of Santa Cruz’s Website at, on, or on channel 25. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 1:15 pm.

In an effort mitigate the spread of COVID-19, there will be no public access at Chambers or the Tony Hill Room – the meeting is now closed to public. To submit comments, members of the public can email and must include the agenda item they are emailing about in the subject line.
