A Message from the Chief

Welcome to the Santa Cruz Police Department.
Policing in a constitutional democracy is like no other profession on the planet.  Police officers shoulder a huge societal burden to ensure that each and every person’s constitutional rights are protected; they work to protect the safety of a complex and diverse community encumbered in difficult issues, and yet survive to return home to loved ones.  The police are the visible representation of government. Our officers police Santa Cruz out of a sense of duty and honor, not out of comfort or convenience, all-the-while seeking the best of the greater community. Santa Cruz police officers are simply amazing!

The police must work in each community to solve problems bigger than our individual capabilities. I believe that when the police and community labor together, we build resilient bonds of hope, trust and optimism not easily broken.  This idea of eternal hope and optimism validates that in Santa Cruz we can improve livability, develop a culture of lawfulness, and treat others with civility and respect. Santa Cruz can serve as an example of how community and police collaboration improves the quality of life, reduces crime and improves safety.

Todos somos Santa Cruz- We are all Santa Cruz!

Whether you are a long time resident, a local skater and surfer, an immigrant or high tech new comer, all are welcome in Santa Cruz.  Here is what you can count on from SCPD:

  • SCPD treats all people with respect
  • SCPD values transparency and accountability to the public
  • SCPD serves with the consent of the greater Santa Cruz community
  • SCPD will make fair and judicious decisions
  • SCPD will police passionately, yet be compassionate
  • SCPD will be relentless in our effort to right wrongs, ensure justice and protect the constitution
  • SCPDwe are crime fighters!

The men and women of SCPD understand our job is to defend those too weak to protect themselves; support those who need help standing; point the lost in the right direction, and up-lift others to see the wonderful possibilities present in Santa Cruz.  I believe Santa Cruz is a world class city with unlimited potential.

Please join us in helping this great city realize that potential.
